If a socket is burning or smoking: don't touch it if it's hot, switch off at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so, and keep people away. If there are flames or smoke, leave the property and call 999.
Why sockets overheat
The most common cause is a loose connection, either at the socket terminals or in the plug. Loose connections create resistance and heat, which gets worse over time. Overloading with multi-way adaptors and high-power appliances such as heaters, kettles, tumble dryers and air fryers is another common cause. We don't just fit a new faceplate: we check the terminations and test the circuit so the problem doesn't come back.
What we can do

- Repair heat-damaged cable ends and connections
- Replace ageing accessories throughout a room or property
- Add extra sockets to reduce reliance on extension leads. See installations
- Fit USB, outdoor, shaver and fused spur outlets
- Upgrade to metal, screwless or designer finishes
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using a socket that smells of burning?
No. Stop using it straight away and switch it off at the consumer unit until it has been inspected.
Is a warm plug normal?
Slight warmth with high-power appliances can be normal, but a plug or socket that's hot to touch, discoloured or smells is not. Get it checked.
Can you match my existing sockets?
Usually. We can supply most standard and decorative ranges, or upgrade a whole room so everything matches.
