Faults we diagnose
- RCDs or breakers tripping, whether constantly, randomly or only when it rains
- Complete or partial loss of power in a property
- Circuits or individual sockets that have stopped working
- Flickering or dimming lights
- Earth faults, neutral faults and borrowed neutrals from previous alterations
- Low insulation resistance in older wiring or damp locations
- Faults in outbuildings, garden supplies and external lighting
- Appliances that trip the circuit when they switch on
How we find electrical faults
Fault finding is where testing experience really counts. Our electricians come from an electrical testing and inspection background, which means a structured approach instead of trial and error:
- Listen: when does it happen, what was running, has any work been done recently?
- Isolate: narrow it down to the circuit, then the section of circuit, then the accessory or appliance.
- Test: insulation resistance, continuity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD testing to confirm the fault.
- Explain: show you what we found and what it will take to put right.
Intermittent faults can take longer to track down, especially if they only appear under certain conditions. We'll tell you up front how we'll approach it and keep you updated on time and cost.
Fault finding for landlords and commercial premises
Recurring faults in rented property cause repeat call-outs, unhappy tenants and lost rent. We find and fix the root cause and give landlords and agents a clear written summary. For offices and shops, we can schedule fault investigation outside trading hours where availability allows. See commercial services.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my RCD trip at random?
Common causes include a faulty appliance (often a kettle, washing machine, immersion heater or outdoor equipment), moisture in an outdoor socket or light, deteriorating cable insulation, or a combination of small leakages on one RCD. Testing finds which.
Can you find a fault that only happens occasionally?
Usually, yes. Insulation resistance testing often reveals weaknesses even when the fault isn't happening at that moment. For very intermittent faults we may split circuits across RCBOs to isolate the problem.
How long does fault finding take?
Many faults are found within the first hour or two. Complex or intermittent faults can take longer. We'll keep you informed as we go.
